Obstetrical Management of Partial Uterine Prolapse in a Mare

Uterine Prolapse is termed as the eversion of uterus or casting ‘’wethers’’ calf bed. It a common complication third stage labor and more in pleuripara than primipara. prolapse cows ewes, but rarely seen mares, dogs, cats. A six-year-old female pony was brought to emergency unit at Obstetrics Unit Veterinary Clinical Complex, College Research Institute Orathanadu, with history aborted pre-term (eight months) day before mass hanging through vulva. On clinical examination, animal dull standing posture, congested mucous membrane tachycardia noticed. Further examination revealed severe congestion edema prolapsed no evidence fetal remnants. vaginal explored constricted cervix. Blood samples were collected for hematology serum biochemistry. Upon epidural anesthesia, washed potassium permanganate solution then hypertonic solution. After 10 minutes, warm normal saline. Using Cetrimide cream lubricant an antiseptic, reduced repositioned. No Buhner’s suture applied. Mare has received 40 IU oxytocin involution process begin. Systemic antibiotics anti-inflammatory drugs administered five days. lavage done three days saline povidone-iodine aid uterine clearance. consequent days, mare had improved cervix closed discharge. The uneventful recovery.
